Another common diagnosis for back pain is SI joint pain. The SI joint, or sacroiliac joint, is where the sacrum (part of your spine) and the ilium (part of your pelvic bone) connect, forming a joint. Improper sitting or poor posture can place a lot of pressure on the SI joint, leading to inflammation and pain, which is often felt on either side of your spine.
Typically, the pain can be experienced on the right or left side, indicating the SI joint may be acting up. SI joint pain is common because the sacroiliac joints are responsible for transferring weight and force between the upper body and the lower body. They are critical for stabilizing your pelvis and supporting movement, so when they become misaligned, it can lead to pain and discomfort.
Several factors can contribute to SI joint dysfunction. Repetitive movements, such as lifting improperly or frequent bending, can put strain on the joint. Pregnancy is another common cause, as the hormone relaxin causes the ligaments around the pelvis to loosen, making the SI joint more vulnerable to misalignment. Additionally, sedentary lifestyles, overuse from sports, or trauma from falls can all lead to SI joint pain. Because these joints are constantly engaged in movement and weight-bearing tasks, they are prone to wear and tear, making SI joint pain a frequent issue for many individuals.
If you haven’t been able to stop your SI joint pain, it may be because the root cause hasn’t been properly addressed. Many treatments focus on masking the pain, such as medications or temporary fixes like rest or ice, without targeting the underlying issue. SI joint pain often arises from poor posture, improper movement patterns, or misalignment in the pelvic region. If these factors aren’t corrected, the pain can persist and even worsen over time. Simply managing the symptoms without treating the cause means that the problem will continue to impact your daily activities.
The consequences of not fixing SI joint pain can be devastating. Chronic pain can limit your mobility, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks or enjoy physical activities you once loved. Over time, untreated SI joint dysfunction can lead to muscle weakness, poor posture, and compensatory movements that strain other parts of your body. This can create a cycle of discomfort that spreads to other areas like your lower back, hips, or knees. If left untreated, SI joint pain may lead to long-term disability and a decrease in quality of life, so it’s essential to address the root cause early to avoid these complications.
To treat SI joint pain, we focus on aligning the pelvic bone and the hip joint. When your pelvis is misaligned, it puts unnecessary pressure on the SI joint, causing discomfort and limiting movement. Misalignment may occur due to poor posture, muscle imbalances, or even repetitive stress on the joint. By thoroughly assessing how your pelvis moves, we can identify the exact issue and apply the proper manual techniques to realign it. This approach helps to alleviate the pain and prevent it from returning. I’ve seen great results with just a few sessions – sometimes even after one session, patients begin feeling significant improvement, and their mobility increases.
In addition to manual therapy, we also use KT taping for the SI joint. The tape is applied in a way that helps realign the joint, guiding the pelvis to move more efficiently and reducing the pressure on the SI joint. The taping provides additional support during daily activities, helping the joint function properly while it heals. Along with these treatments, we incorporate specific exercises to strengthen the muscles around the SI joint and improve overall posture. By combining manual therapy, KT taping, and targeted exercises, we can effectively address SI joint pain and restore normal function.
